The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 came into force in 2007 to strengthen the protection of vulnerable adults. Two years later, the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) were introduced to provide additional safeguards for individuals who cannot consent to their care arrangements. This Mental Capacity Act training course explains the principles of the MCA, its relationship to DoLS, and how care staff can ensure compliance while carrying out their daily responsibilities.
Learners will gain a clear understanding of how to assess capacity, apply the principles of assessment, and act in the best interests of those they support. In addition, the course explores carer liability, the importance of accurate record‑keeping, and the role of advance decisions. By the end, participants will understand what constitutes a deprivation of liberty, how assessments are carried out, and how to safeguard the rights of vulnerable individuals.
Care staff often face complex decisions when supporting individuals who may lack capacity. Without the right training, however, they risk breaching legal requirements or failing to protect the rights of those in their care. As a result, this course ensures learners can apply the MCA confidently, recognise when to assess capacity, and follow the correct procedures for DoLS.
